Description
These French Bread Rolls are soft, flavorful, and incredibly easy to make. With a simple blend of warm water, yeast, and flour, they rise beautifully and pair perfectly with any meal, making them a must-try for anyone seeking homemade goodness.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 ⅓ cups warm water
- 1 packet instant dry yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons)
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (or preferred oil)
- 1 ½ teaspoons salt
- 3 ⅓ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon water
- 2 tablespoons melted salted butter
Instructions
- In a stand mixer bowl, combine warm water, yeast, sugar, olive oil, salt, and flour. Knead on low speed until mixed.
- Increase speed to medium and knead until the dough is smooth and pulls away from the bowl, approximately 6-8 minutes.
- Transfer the dough to an oiled bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm environment for about 1 hour until it has doubled in size.
- After rising, punch down the dough, and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a tight ball.
- Place the dough balls on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover, and let rise again for 30 minutes until puffy.
- Preheat the oven to 400°F. Create an egg wash by mixing an egg with water, then brush it over the dough balls.
- Optional: Score the tops of the rolls with a sharp knife or lame.
- Bake the rolls for 18-20 minutes, adding ice cubes to the oven to create steam for a crispy crust.
- Once baked, brush the tops with melted butter before serving.
Notes
Ensure the water is warm, not hot, to activate the yeast properly.
These rolls are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container.
Feel free to customize with herbs or cheese for added flavor.
