These Portuguese custard tarts are a delightful blend of flaky pastry filled with rich vanilla custard, perfect for any occasion or craving. They’re simple to make and utterly scrumptious!
Ingredients

- 4 large egg yolks
- 6 tbsp sugar (about 4 oz)
- 1 heaped tbsp cornstarch
- ½ tsp vanilla powder or extract
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- 1 ¼ cups whole milk
- 2 strips lemon zest
- 8 oz puff pastry
- pinch of salt
Instructions
- Whisk egg yolks, sugar, cornstarch, vanilla, and cinnamon in a saucepan.
- Gradually pour in milk while whisking to combine; add lemon zest.
- Cook over medium heat, whisking until thickened (5-7 minutes).
- Prepare muffin tin by greasing it and preheat oven to 250°C/480°F.
- Roll out puff pastry and cut discs for the muffin cavities; press them in.
- Fill pastry shells with custard about ¾ full and bake for 7-10 minutes until blistered.
- Cool in molds for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
Notes
Use room temperature ingredients for a smoother custard texture.
For dairy-free, substitute whole milk with almond milk or oat milk.
These tarts can be prepared ahead of time and baked fresh for serving.
