Description

This Swiss Steak is packed with flavor and features tender chunks of beef slow-cooked in tomatoes and peppers. It’s a comforting meal, ideal for simple weeknight dinners or cozy family gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ pounds round steak
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • ½ cup yellow onion chopped
  • ½ cup green pepper chopped
  • 28 ounces canned diced tomatoes with juices
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (160°C).
  2. Cut the round steak into large, even cubes, about 2 inches each.
  3. In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, garlic powder, black pepper, and salt. Add the steak cubes to the mixture and coat thoroughly.
  4. Heat olive oil in a Dutch oven over medium heat. Brown the steak cubes on both sides for about 3 minutes each.
  5. Add the chopped onion and green pepper to the pot, sautéing for 4 minutes while stirring frequently to avoid burning.
  6. Stir in the diced tomatoes with their juice, beef broth, and Worcestershire sauce until well combined.
  7. Cover the Dutch oven with a lid and place it in the preheated oven. Cook for 1 ½ to 2 hours, or until the steak is fork-tender.
  8. Serve the Swiss Steak over a bed of mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.

Notes

Browning the steak properly adds depth of flavor to the dish.
For a thicker sauce, you can combine a tablespoon of cornstarch with water and stir it in during the last 10 minutes of cooking.
